GORUCK Rucker 5.0 Review: Is It Worth It Over the 4.0 in 2026?

Checked August 24, 2026. GORUCK now sells only the Rucker 5.0 direct, at $265 for both the 20L and the 25L, across eleven colourways. The Rucker 4.0 is gone from goruck.com and survives on Amazon and remaining retail stock at about $255.

That $10 gap is the whole story, and it kills the plan most people arrive with. Buying the outgoing model to save money normally works. Here it saves you the price of a coffee and costs you the two changes that actually matter.

What actually changed

Two structural things, and a third that is nice rather than important.

A built-in frame sheet. The 5.0 has a sheet running the height of the pack to hold its shape under load. A loaded ruck without one barrels outward and drags the weight away from your spine, which is the single biggest comfort variable when you are carrying 30 lb or more for an hour.

A 30mm high-density EVA lumbar pad. GORUCK's own description is blunt about the size of it. The job is to stop plate weight sitting on the base of your spine and move it onto your hips.

Magnetic internal pockets. Snag-free and quicker than a zip. Genuinely pleasant, and not a reason to buy anything.

The plate pockets are dual and elevated: a short pocket sized for 10, 20 and 30 lb plates and a long pocket for 30 and 45 lb, rated to 75 lb combined. Elevated is the important word. A plate riding high against your shoulder blades carries very differently from one sitting in the bottom of a cargo compartment, and it is the reason a purpose-built rucking pack beats a tactical backpack of the same volume.

The $10 problem

At the time of writing the 4.0 is about $255 on Amazon and the 5.0 is $265 direct. Ten dollars.

If the gap were $80 the answer would be different, and for a while it was: the 4.0 spent part of this year discounting hard as stock cleared. It has now settled close enough to the current model that the older suspension is not a saving, it is a compromise you are paying almost full price for.

There is one honest reason to still choose the 4.0. Buying through Amazon gets you Amazon's returns process and shipping, where the 5.0 is direct-only. If you want to try a ruck on and send it back easily, that is worth something.

20L or 25L

Both are $265, so this is purely about torso length and what you carry.

The 20L suits shorter torsos and people who ruck with a plate and little else. The 25L is the better pick if you carry layers, water and a change of clothes, or if you are tall enough that a 20L rides high on your back. Since there is no price difference, size to your body rather than your budget.

If you already own a Rucker 4.0

Keep it. The frame sheet and lumbar pad are real improvements, but they are improvements to a pack that already works and carries a lifetime warranty. Replacing a functioning 4.0 to gain a stiffer back panel is the sort of upgrade that feels productive and changes nothing about your training.

Spend the $265 on a second plate, better shoes, or the coaching you have been putting off.

Where the Basic Rucker fits

If $265 is the obstacle rather than the choice, the Basic Rucker is about $155 and has the elevated plate pocket, which is the feature that matters most. It gives up the frame sheet, the heavier fabric and some of the carry hardware. For a first pack at a lower entry price it is the more sensible starting point than an older flagship.
