Choose the GR1 or GR2 for Your Use
I've carried the 26L GR1 and 34L GR2 with a 20 lb plate plus gear. The GR1 suits my everyday use; the GR2's second compartment kept my drone kit accessible. These are different layouts, not successive generations. I haven't tested 30 lb over 12 miles in either bag.
My bags use 1000D CORDURA and YKK zippers. Check the selected version's materials and dimensions before buying. The SCARS guarantee backs both bags, with repair or replacement at GORUCK's discretion.

The bag between a dedicated ruck and a travel pack. Over about two weeks of use with a 20 lb plate, the 26L carried well, opened flat like a suitcase and worked as an everyday bag with a padded laptop compartment. For plate-only rucking, the Rucker 5.0 is the specialist.

GORUCK GR2
GORUCK's two-compartment travel rucksack. In our review the 34L carried a 20 lb plate plus a full day's gear: smaller kit stayed reachable up front, the plate and bulkier items rode in the main compartment, and the outside MOLLE took a bottle holder and other attachments. It's the GORUCK bag for carrying gear; for mostly plate training, the Rucker 5.0 is the better fit.
What the GR1 Is
The GR1 is GORUCK's original rucksack: one main compartment that opens flat, a separate laptop compartment with a removable frame sheet, a quick-access pocket under the top handle, an external slant pocket and three interior pockets.
For ruckers, the upside of one main compartment is that everything packs in one place, with the plate sleeve against the back panel. The downside is packing decisions: small items share the space, so you'll either use pouches or accept some digging.
The GR1 comes in 21L and 26L. GORUCK lists the 26L at 12 x 20 x 6.75 inches and 3.1 lb, and the 21L at 11.5 x 18 x 5.5 inches and 2.8 lb. The 21L suits shorter torsos.
What the GR2 Is
The GR2 is a parallel model to the GR1, not its replacement. It adds a second full compartment in front of the main one, each with its own pockets, plus a laptop compartment and removable frame sheet.
For ruckers, the second compartment is excellent if you carry gear that should stay separate from the plate, travel one-bag, or need to reach kit on the move. It adds little when the only thing in the bag is a plate.
The GR2 comes in 26L, 34L and 40L. GORUCK describes the 26L as a day ruck or small travel ruck, the 34L as big enough to travel from but not too big for a day ruck, and the 40L as its one-bag travel size.
Compartment Structure: The Real Decision
Liter ratings can mislead here. GORUCK says the GR2 26L is the same height as the GR1 21L, and its extra liters come from the second compartment.
So a GR2 26L is not a GR1 26L with a front pocket added: its main compartment is shorter, and the space is split in two. If you're choosing between them, you're choosing between one tall main space and two shorter ones.
How They Carry Under Load
Neither of my bags arrived with a sternum strap or hip belt fitted. I liked the GR1 for everyday use and the GR2 for carrying my drone kit. I haven't tested an optional belt on either.
I noticed lower-back numbness after about 90 minutes with my GR2 setup. That doesn't establish a cause or a general weight limit. Fit, packing and the individual matter; neither bag has a universal comfort threshold at 30, 35 or 45 lb.
Build Quality and Materials
Both bags use a 1000D Cordura shell, YKK zippers with 550 cord pulls, MOLLE webbing and a removable frame sheet. Back-panel fabric varies by color on GORUCK's listings.
GORUCK's SCARS guarantee covers worn or damaged bags, with repair or replacement at GORUCK's discretion and no time limit. Footwear has separate manufacturing-defect coverage; it isn't an unlimited promise for every product.

Daily carry plus occasional rucking: GR1 26L. Compact build or shorter torso: GR1 21L. Carrying separate gear you need to reach: GR2 34L. Weekend overnight: GR2 26L. One-bag travel: GR2 34L or 40L. Mostly plate rucking or events: the Rucker 5.0 rather than either. Budget-constrained: 5.11 RUSH 24 2.0.

Choose Between the GR1 and GR2
Choose the GR1 for a slimmer everyday, work and travel layout. Choose the GR2 when you'll use the extra compartment and capacity. They are parallel models, not successive generations; trip duration alone doesn't decide the fit. My own loaded-carry experiences are described below.
