A rucking vest built around GORUCK's curved plates. GORUCK describes the curved shape and center opening as space for chest expansion; sustained comfort needs separate testing. The vest arrives empty, and the plates cost extra.

Strengths

  • Curved plates have a center opening; GORUCK describes it as room for chest expansion
  • Magnetic chest pocket and quick-release cummerbund handles
  • SCARS lifetime guarantee, same as GORUCK's packs

Weaknesses

  • Plates are a separate purchase, so the real entry cost is well above the vest price
  • GORUCK says the smaller size can sit higher on larger people
  • Check both panel dimensions and the waist adjustment range before choosing a size
Best For
Ruckers who prefer a curved plate and are comfortable buying the weight separately.

The Rucking Weight Vest gives GORUCK's vest lineup its adjustable option: buy the vest, then choose the Curved plate pair that sets your load. I've got two sets here, making 20 and 30 lb setups with the vest included. That's useful flexibility, but it also means the vest price is only part of the bill.

Mine is the L/XL in Coyote Brown, with a tag showing it was made in Vietnam. This is a first look at the loading system and features; loaded comfort, bounce, breathing and heat over a longer session still need testing.

What the plate labels mean

My pair of 9.25 lb plates totals 18.5 lb before the vest. The 14.25 lb plates total 28.5 lb. GORUCK lists the empty vest at 1.5 lb, bringing those combinations to 20 and 30 lb respectively. There's also a lighter pair for a 14 lb complete setup. GORUCK's vest specifications.

These are the Curved plates with the large center opening. GORUCK specifies them for this vest only; my flat Standard plates belong to the backpack system. The plate introduction shows the distinction and breaks down each pair's weight. Curved plate compatibility.

Seating the plates took some force in my initial setup. The inner strap passes through the opening, and the outer flap closes over the pocket. Follow GORUCK's fitting instructions when loading and adjusting it.

The features that matter here

The vest has padded shoulder straps and release handles on the cummerbund. The magnetic chest pocket is the practical extra over the Achilles, which takes a simpler approach with built-in weight.

GORUCK lists a 500D Cordura exterior and 210D Cordura interior. It sells S/M and L/XL sizes; the front and back panels share their dimensions, while the straps and cummerbund differ. Choose using the fitted garment, rather than assuming a larger size creates bigger plate pockets. Materials and sizing.

Budget for the complete setup

The vest alone sits in the $150-300 price band, with either of my Curved pairs in the $50-150 band. Budget for both purchases: a vest without plates is an empty vest. The heavier pair costs more and was unavailable at the October 4, 2026 stock check. Vest price, pair prices.

The buying reason is the ability to change the load while keeping the vest. Whether I prefer its carry to the Achilles - or to a backpack - is the next question. For now, make sure you're pricing the plates as well as the garment.
