Why this kit

Event day is the wrong day to discover your headlamp battery is dead, your reflective belt got left at home, or the plate you bought online sits at an angle in your pack. Cadre will inspect every item on the published packing list. Missing items mean burpees or going home.

This loadout is the intersection of three checklists: the official GORUCK event packing list (cadre-required gear), what every Tough finisher we've debriefed actually packed, and what the gear-room veterans across our reader network treat as non-negotiable. It's not the longest kit - it's the kit that survives an inspection plus 12 hours of moving.

A few non-obvious calls. Two pairs of socks: blistered feet end events, swap at the halfway log PT. Pre-tape with Leukotape: cadre won't penalize you for prophylactic taping, and at hour six you'll be glad. The glow belt is the single most-forgotten item on every Tough start line - we know because cadre has us doing burpees over it at 0500 in the rain. The Petzl Actik Core is rechargeable so you don't end up in the woods with dead alkalines.

The plate weight depends on your bodyweight class: 30 lb if you're 150 lb or more, 20 lb if you're under. Color-coded GORUCK plates make cadre's inspection trivial and prevent the "is that really 30?" arguments. Use the GORUCK Rucker 4 - not a competitor pack - because the Rucker's plate pocket is exactly sized to GORUCK plates, the SCARS lifetime warranty matters on event terrain, and most cadre know the pack on sight.

What this loadout is NOT for: shorter "Basic" events under 5 hours (overkill), Star Course navigation events (different gear list, no plate), or training rucks (you don't need the headlamp + glow belt for a 5-mile neighborhood walk).

Questions

Will I pass cadre inspection with this kit?+
On the published list: yes. Cadre add items per event - usually nutrition, ID, and event-specific items like a flag - so always cross-check your event email 48 hours before the start line. This kit covers the gear that's on every Tough/Light/Star Course list.
What weight plate should I bring?+
30 lb if you weigh 150 lb or more, 20 lb if you weigh under 150 lb. These are the official GORUCK thresholds. Color-coded GORUCK plates make this obvious during inspection. Some events publish their own weight requirements - check the event email.
Why two pairs of socks?+
One pair gets soaked in the first water feature or sweat-through after hour three. Changing into dry socks at the halfway PT break is what separates finishers from people who walk the last 6 hours on macerated feet. Pre-pack the second pair in a ziploc.
Do I really need the reflective glow belt?+
Yes. Cadre will inspect for it specifically. It's the single most-forgotten item per cadre we've talked to. Every Tough event starts before dawn or ends after dark, and the belt is non-negotiable for road movement.
Can I swap the GORUCK Rucker for a 5.11 Rush 24?+
You can ruck a Tough with a Rush 24 - people have - but the plate pocket isn't sized for GORUCK plates, so plate shifting becomes a 12-hour annoyance. Cadre also recognize GORUCK packs on sight, which speeds inspection. For events specifically, the Rucker is the right call.
