How to use the pace calculator
Enter any two values from distance, total time, and pace. The calculator returns the missing value, a pace label, and the elapsed time at each mile or kilometer. Use it to plan a route or compare a completed ruck with the pace you intended to hold.
What the four pace labels mean
The labels are planning shorthand, not physiological zones. Easy is slower than 20:00 min/mile or 12:26 min/km. Steady is 17:00 to 20:00 min/mile or 10:34 to 12:26 min/km. Brisk is 14:00 to 17:00 min/mile or 8:42 to 10:34 min/km, and fast is under 14:00 min/mile or 8:42 min/km. Load, route, and fitness determine how hard any of those paces feel.
Comparing loaded and unloaded pace
No fixed slowdown per pound is used. A pack's effect depends on the person, load, grade, surface, weather, and duration. Record your actual pace with and without load on a similar route for a useful personal comparison.
Event pace and distance splits
Check the organizer's current cutoff for your event, then enter that pace and distance. The splits show when you need to reach each mile or kilometer if the pace stays even. Stops, navigation, obstacles, and terrain still need their own time allowance.
What the calculator does not model
It doesn't calculate calorie burn. For that, use the Calorie Calculator, which runs the Pandolf load-carriage equation. It doesn't recommend a starting weight either. The Ruck Weight Calculator does that. It also does not account for hills, trail surface, weather, stops, or pack fit. Those factors can change your actual pace.

Allowing for pace changes
The calculator assumes an even pace. In practice, the opening segment may be slower while you settle into the load, and pace may change later with terrain, stops, heat, or fatigue. Use recent training splits to decide how much time to add to a longer plan.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good rucking pace?
There is no universal good pace. The tool uses four planning bands: under 14:00 min/mile or 8:42 min/km; 14:00 to 17:00 min/mile or 8:42 to 10:34 min/km; 17:00 to 20:00 min/mile or 10:34 to 12:26 min/km; and slower than 20:00 min/mile or 12:26 min/km. Load, terrain, weather, and training history determine how any pace feels.
How much does a ruck slow you down?
This calculator does not convert loaded pace into an estimated unloaded pace. No single adjustment fits every person, load, grade, or surface. Compare your own loaded and unloaded sessions on a similar route when you want that context.
What pace do GORUCK events require?
Event cutoffs vary by format and can change. Check the current event listing and participant rules, then enter that pace and distance to calculate your required splits. A 15:00 min/mile or 9:19 min/km target covers 12 miles or 19.3 kilometers in 3 hours before stops or terrain are added.
How do I calculate mile splits for a long ruck?
Enter your target distance and pace to see elapsed time at each mile or kilometer. For event preparation, work backward from the published cutoff and leave time for stops, route finding, and terrain. The calculator shows steady splits; it does not add those delays for you.
Why does my real pace feel slower than the calculator suggests?
The calculator uses steady pace and does not model hills, uneven trail, heat, stops, pack fit, or fatigue. Any of those can change your actual pace. Treat the result as a planning target and compare it with your own training data.
