Why this kit

Early gear mistakes can make rucking harder than it needs to be. A pack that does not hold the load securely, cotton socks, or shoes that compress under weight can lead to discomfort and rubbing.

Each item addresses one of those problems. The 5.11 Rush 24 has a frame sheet that keeps the load high. The 10 lb GORUCK Sand Ruck Plate provides a flexible starting load, while the adjustable Hyperwear weights make smaller progression steps possible. Darn Tough merino socks manage moisture and carry a lifetime warranty, while Body Glide helps prevent chafing when applied before the ruck.

The Budget tier includes the pack, plate, socks, bottle, and anti-chafe product. Standard adds the Saucony Peregrine 16 and a hydration bladder. Premium swaps in the current GORUCK Rucker 5.0, which has a lifetime SCARS warranty and a plate pocket made for rucking.

This kit is for the first 30 days. Use the Event Day kit for a GORUCK event, and choose a pack designed for the load if you plan to train heavier or focus on speed.

Questions

Why no shoes in the budget tier?+
A stable walking shoe, trail runner, or low hiking shoe may be enough for your first light rucks if it fits well and remains comfortable under load. The Standard tier adds the Saucony Peregrine 16 for more trail grip and a stable platform.
Can I use a regular backpack instead of a rucking pack?+
A sturdy backpack may work for a very light first ruck if you can secure the load high and close to your back. School bags usually lack a frame sheet or a pocket that prevents the weight from shifting, so move to a purpose-built pack before increasing the load.
What weight should I start with?+
Start with a load you can carry with clean posture for 20-30 minutes and progress gradually. The Budget tier uses a flexible 10 lb sand plate. The Standard tier uses adjustable weights so you can make smaller increases instead of jumping straight to 20 lb.
Why Darn Tough socks specifically?+
Cotton holds moisture and can contribute to blisters. Merino wool moves moisture away from the skin. Darn Tough offers a lifetime warranty, which can lower the cost over the life of the socks. Other merino brands can also work well.
