Why this kit
Check your headlamp battery, reflective gear, and plate fit before the event. Pack to your event's published list, and read it again the week of the event because it is the standard you will be held to.
This loadout combines the published GORUCK event packing list with socks, foot care, and other items useful during a long event. Check the list and email for your specific event before packing because requirements can change.
Bring two pairs of socks so you can change if the first pair gets wet. Apply Leukotape before the event to protect known hot spots. Pack the required reflective gear, and charge the Petzl Actik Core if your event list calls for a headlamp or the event runs into the dark. Event pages also set a minimum amount of water; one current Tough Challenge page requires at least 3 liters.
A current Tough Challenge page asks for a 30 lb plate if you weigh more than 150 lb and a 20 lb plate if you weigh less, and it recommends a Rucker with reflectivity. Check your event's current requirement before buying. GORUCK plates are labeled by weight, and the Rucker 5.0 has an elevated plate pocket built for them.
This loadout is more than you need for a five-mile neighborhood training ruck. Star Course navigation events publish their own gear list, so check that list instead of assuming this kit applies.
